Charleston Jazz Club presents Sunset @ 6:04pm Sunday Jazz Jam & Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam Jazz In the Moonlight
Charleston, SC – Charleston Jazz Club founder, Dennis Fassuliotis, in collaboration with Smoky Weiner, Steve Simon Presents and Dr. Eddie White, is pleased to announce two events. Sunset @ 6:04 pm Sunday Jazz Jam on October 23, 2011 and the Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Both events will be held in the dockhouse at Bowens Island. Sunset @ 6:04 pm event will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and the Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam will be from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Sunset @ 6:04 pm will feature two bands and include several other invited artists to “sit in” and add their special talent to the groups. This intimate showcase is designed to generate musical synergy between the two groups and inject the wildcard of guest artists to culminate in a jazz explosion with the natural beauty of the lowcountry at Bowens Island as the backdrop.
Last year’s inaugural Charleston Jazz Jam showcased eighteen of the best Jazz talents in the area in an unscripted, unrehearsed evening of music. Jazz lovers are guaranteed the return of last year’s core rhythm section - bassist Jamie Harris, guitarist Joe Wilson and drummer Anthony Constantine - to anchor this year’s Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam. But the exquisite Lowcountry, dock side setting of Bowen’s Island, has attracted the attention of other top local talent that will be debuting at the Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam at Bowen’s Island and announced at a later time.
The Bowens Island Restaurant was founded in 1946 by May and Jimmy Bowen. Throughout the decades it has been best known for its local oysters harvested and roasted by lowcountry oystermen who have been practicing their family trade for generations. Today, their grandson, Robert Barber, continues this genuine lowcountry tradition with a musical twist. Local blues talent, Smoky Weiner and Barber have created a well known blues venue at the local landmark, most recently hosting the 2011 “Blues on the Dock” Piccolo Spoleto series. But Sunset @ 6:04 pm this will be the first ever public live jazz performance at Bowens Island. Smoky showed up at last year’s inaugural Charleston Jazz Jam at Awendaw Green, and the veteran blues man made a quick transformation to harmonica jazz stylist, pumping out improvisational rifts to jazz standards. Jamming with local clarinetist, business man and international blues producer Steve Simon, and backed up by Harris, Wilson, Constantine and others in the lineup, they brought down the house.
One year later, founder of the Charleston Jazz Club on Facebook, Dennis Fassuliotis and Smoky Weiner are teaming up to produce the Sunset @ 6:04 pm show. Smoky will also be hosting the Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam. These two events will be the first public jazz presented at Bowens Island, but according to Fassuliotis, “they won’t be the last. The rustic beauty of Bowens Island and the natural setting are perfect for jazz. We’ve got sunset, moonlight, the lowcountry, and some of the best talent and food in the area. How can it miss?”
The Charleston Jazz Club (www.facebook.com/chasjazzclub) was founded in 2009 by local businessman Dennis Fassuliotis, to promote jazz in the Charleston area and bring musicians and jazz enthusiasts together for the first time using a social networking site.
The Sunset @ 6:04 pm pm event will be October 23, 2011, from 5 – 9 pm at Bowens Island. There is a $10 admission fee. The restaurant will be open for attendees for food and your favorite beverage. The Second Annual Charleston Jazz Jam will be Novemeber 9, 2011 from 6 – 10 pm at Bowens Island, SC. Bowens Island Restaurant is located off Folly Road at 1870 Bowens Island Road.
